About
The great houses of Ireland have always intrigued me. Growing up in Ireland, they were everywhere so there was lots of intrigue and great stories told.
I worked for the Earl & Countess of Rosse at Birr Castle curating an exhibition of children's clothes for the. There I met the extraordinary Lady Miranda Iveagh ( of the Guinness family) who lived in the gate lodge and invited us to dinner one evening where I could select from her vast collection of perfume bottles for the show. She greeted us in an ankle length tartan skirt, with an enormous hole at the knee. That evening and the ensuing conversation about how grand men used to dress on Grafton Street in Dublin in the 19th century was one of the most memorable and formative of my design career.
Even in secondary school, my classroom was the former billiard room where I sat next to an enormous iron fireplace with the fleur-de-lis cast throughout - a reference to the Prince of Wales who visited and for whom this room was specially built.
Later discovering Luggala House, Castle Gurteen de la Poer, Slane Castle, and Dromoland amongst others have inspired and enriched my design vocabulary.
This and the great poetry of William Butler Yeats bring poetic intention to my punk spirit.
Yeats himself called it a "terrible beauty"......"a terrible, terrible beauty is born."
